Alberta Ecotrust has been leading environmental and climate solutions in Alberta since 1991. We have invested millions of dollars in nearly a thousand projects and organizations, collectively protecting and restoring natural ecosystems, reducing emissions and building community resilience.

Our supported projects
Since our grant programs started, we’ve had the chance to fund over 907 amazing organizations and non-profits, giving more than $19.5 million to support their work on climate and environmental solutions in Alberta.
Our three grant streams cover everything from large urban emissions reduction projects to smaller efforts that build organizational capacity.
We’re proud to share the many inspiring stories of the work these groups have done and to have been part of their journey.

Capacity Building for Alberta's Indigenous-Led Conservation Future
Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) | 2022 Environmental Impact Grantee.
NCC offered technical, financial and logistical support to Indigenous-Led Conservation Areas in Alberta and the Indigenous-Led stewardship strategy of the Métis Nation of Alberta. Indigenous-led conservation emphasizes self-governance and respecting Traditional Knowledge, meaningfully reconnecting communities with the land. It supports self-determination, the exercise of inherent rights and cultural revitalization, ensuring Indigenous people are actively involved in protecting and restoring land and water for future generations.

Alberta Native Bee Council | 2022 Springboard Grantee.
By bringing on a part-time staff member, the Alberta Native Bee Council invested in building its organizational strength and refining its processes. Through this project, they were able to finalize their strategic plan, identify funding opportunities, submit grant applications and coordinate and develop partnerships. This project not only strengthened their organization but also amplified their efforts to foster vibrant, resilient native pollinator populations and habitats.

Biosphere Institute of the Bow Valley and the Bow Valley Green Energy Co-operative | 2021 Climate Innovation Grantee.
Through their project, they demonstrated the viability of community solar generation. In October 2023, they installed the first community-funded renewable energy project in Calgary: a 26 kW solar PV system on Temple B’nai Tikvah. The system will generate 30,000 kWh of energy while offsetting 20 tCO2e annually. With the community generation model, some of the revenue generated will be diverted back to other community projects. In addition, the learnings from this project were shared through an open-source Community Generation Manual, which details how to form a community generation initiative using a unique Micro-generation model in Alberta.
